WILDERNESS SEASON 1 REVIEW : –

‘Wilderness’ is a revenge story with some twisted aspects weaved into the plot at its center. This psychological thriller goes quickly, and while the plot isn’t very original, it’s the presentation that keeps you interested. This series is similar to David Fincher’s ‘Gone Girl,’ but with less intensity. It has some thrilling moments and succeeds in capturing your attention, although there are several protracted periods that may grow tedious.

You often know exactly what the protagonist is planning, and her future actions may often be predicted, but happily, it injects a sense of freshness thanks to a creative narrative structure given from the perspective of women. The main charm of the series is that most of the characters are imperfect, giving the narrative a realistic feel.

Will (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) and Liv (Jenna Coleman), a British couple, have recently migrated to New York from the UK, and everything appears to be falling into place for them. They have a bright future ahead of them, thanks to a strong marriage and abundant financial means for a lavish lifestyle. Their bright future, however, takes a sharp turn when Liv discovers a note on Will’s phone. Her world is turned upside down when she realizes that her husband is having an extramarital affair and surreptitiously philandering. Will manages to calm her down by explaining that it was a one-time occurrence that he profoundly regrets.

To rekindle their romance and make amends, he proposes a road trip across America, a goal Liv has always had. Will unexpectedly runs with Cara (Ashley Benson), a colleague with whom he is also having an affair, while visiting a national park on their tour. When Cara is engaged in a bizarre accident, it changes everyone’s lives.

The delicate problem of adultery is at the heart of ‘Wilderness,’ a throbbing theme that delves deep into the labyrinth of consequences a woman faces when entangled in such a dreadful situation. It delves into the various issues she faces while overwhelmed by hatred and anger. It becomes a tipping point for Liv as her spouse continues to lie to her, leaving her exhausted and determined to break free from this cycle. The story takes a risk by revealing the “cheating” component early on, then digs into Olivia’s plan for vengeance, which is full of unexpected twists and turns.

Jenna Coleman stands out among the group as Liv, the hapless wife who refuses to tolerate her husband’s chronic philandering after finding it. Coleman’s portrayal of powerlessness after discovering that the person she loves the most had betrayed her, as well as her subsequent emotional collapse after learning further details, feels immensely true. Will, played by Oliver Jackson-Cohen, is convincing, although his performance could have been more pleasant if he dived deeper into his character. One can’t help but wish that his character had been fleshed out more.

Adapted from a novel by BE Jones, a former journalist and police press officer as well as an experienced author, ‘Wilderness’ makes a particular endeavor to explore unexplored terrain by preserving an all-female perspective. The events of the series take on a novel and innovative depth in the field of drama, diving into themes of co-dependency, independence, and individual choices, with creator Marnie Dickens and director So Yong Kim at the helm.

The plot itself is nuanced, with multiple different narratives intimately interwoven to the overall narrative. ‘Wilderness’ unfolds as a perplexing story, highlighting the situation of a woman who has been terribly wounded by a web of serial lies rather than a revenge drama.
