THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER SEASON 1:-

Review:-

If you’ve seen any of Mike Flanagan’s other films, especially ‘The Haunting of Bly Manor’ or ‘The Haunting of Hill House’ (all available on Netflix), you’ll recognize his unique knack for flawlessly merging horrific horror with riveting drama. ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’ follows a same formula, with a talented ensemble cast from his previous films. Carla Gugino, a gifted American actress noted for her flair for selecting complicated storylines and portraying strange characters with astonishing ease, is at the forefront. This time, Flanagan and Gugino team up to tell a gritty story about a wealthy family on the verge of ruin as they try to preserve their future and money, which has been built on years of deception and dishonest methods.

The plot centres around Madeline and Roderick, who are brilliantly performed by Mary McDonnell and Bruce Greenwood, respectively. Their dysfunctional and dark background has led to an astonishingly affluent yet equally sinister heritage linked to Fortunato drugs. Roderick has fathered several children as a result of his irresponsible lifestyle, but he feels that once you’re an Usher, you’re family. This isn’t to say he’ll spare anyone he sees as a threat to his multibillion-dollar drug empire, which is run by his astute and vicious sister, Madeline. They form an unrelenting force, undaunted even by the tragic loss of their own children.

‘The Fall of the House of Usher’ captivates the audience from the first scene. Flanagan expertly balances several characters and plotlines without losing sight of the basic idea or slowing the pace of the narrative. It’s a tutorial for creators of long, tedious, and dark OTT webseries with a slew of characters and plots that never get anywhere. Each vignette advances the plot, and the non-linear storytelling adds a sense of mystery without confounding the spectator. This despite switching between timelines and occurrences. The affluent lifestyle of the characters is vividly depicted by the opulent residence and other settings. While there are some jump scares and a powerful background score that might be overbearing at times, they typically complement the storyline.

Another excellent feature is the complex and nuanced storyline, with the director giving tiny hints without revealing too much. It manages to strike a careful balance between predictability and comprehension of the story’s emerging pattern. The show’s enigmatic weave is enhanced by the skillful use of dark humor in dialogues and situations. Blood, gore, and nudity are used sparingly and never seem forced. Henry Thomas and Rahul Kohli, who play minor characters, stand out for their convincing performances. Thomas captures the tenderness and drive of a young Roderick Usher, while Kohli shines as the arrogant and privileged Leo Usher. As the young and debaucherous Perry Usher, Sauriyan Sapkota impresses. Carla Gugino’s portrayal of a cryptic figure, on the other hand, accentuates this unusually twisted and wicked tale.

With its dramatic action and gruesome murders, this series is not for the faint of heart. ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’ highlights filmmaker Mike Flanagan’s talent in infusing horror with a human touch and attaching the audience to the characters, regardless of their flaws or qualities.
