A community in the suburbs with a huge lake. A calm existence is led by a single mother who loves her kid, a school teacher who cares for her students, and innocent youngsters. A brawl breaks out at school one day. It appeared to be a typical argument between youngsters, but their accounts disagreed, and it grew into a major issue involving society and the media. Then, one rainy morning, the children vanish.

“Monster” is a Japanese drama directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda and written by Yuji Sakamoto. The film follows three characters, a boy, a mother, and a teacher, as they navigate a complex struggle for understanding between elemental disasters and a monsoon.

The story begins with Minato, a preteen who begins fifth grade, and his single mother, Saori, becomes concerned when Minato returns home with injuries. She blames his teacher, Hori, who is fired over the accusation. Kore-eda’s discerning but delicate style blends the layered form of the screenplay with Kore-eda’s sensitivity and low-key naturalism.

The film’s first segment hints at science fiction, while the second pivots into a Kafkaesque style. The film is beautifully detailed and accompanied by an aching score from Ryuichi Sakamoto, who passed away in March. “Monster” is one of the finest films of the year, and its structure carries secrets that can only be unraveled through patience and empathy.
