‘Sam Bahadur’ is a film that tells the story of a legendary Indian Army officer, Sam Manekshaw, who faces challenges and a close relationship with General Yahya Khan from Pakistan. The film also explores his candid behavior, such as referring to Indira Gandhi as ‘Sweetie’. Vicky Kaushal’s performance brings the character to life, providing an authentic portrayal. However, the film lacks cohesion, with several milestones from Sam Manekshaw’s career being pieced together, resulting in a slightly underwhelming final outcome.
One drawback of the film is its inability to generate heightened tension and intrigue. The screenplay falls short in effectively incorporating dramatic intensity, and the treatment of female characters is also lacking. Sanya Malhotra, Sam’s wife, makes only fleeting appearances, while Fatima Sana Shaikh fails to bring Indira Gandhi’s strong will and assertiveness to the forefront.
The film’s charm comes from Sam’s interactions with Gurkha soldiers, his comical exchanges with a South Indian cook, and his encounters with Indira Gandhi. These moments highlight the synergy between Sam and Indira Gandhi, showcasing their understanding and respect for each other’s perspectives.
Vicky Kaushal’s performance is the standout element of the film, with impeccable mannerisms, flawless diction, and an authoritative aura. Mohd Zeeshan Ayub plays General Yahya Khan, and Govind Namdeo portrays Sardar Patel. While ‘Sam Bahadur’ aims to encapsulate the career of a decorated Army officer, it only partially succeeds in capturing those moments, lacking a cohesive portrayal of the protagonist’s journey.
